Water softening is the removal of calcium, magnesium and iron ions from water by means of ion exchange. It is performed in a water softener, which replaces the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium ions. This reduces the hardness of water, producing "soft" water that does not form scale or cause soap to form a solid curd at low temperatures (as it would in hard water).
